Regulations for towbar bike racks 2025

The MIT Decree of 19 December 2024 (Official Gazette of 21 January 2025) simplified the rules for rear bike racks, including towbar models. Key points: no inspection or registration update is required, provided that the load does not obstruct the license plate or rear lights. The towbar must still be installed by a certified workshop.

If the rack or bikes partially cover the plate or lights, a duplicate license plate issued by the authorities and a dedicated lighting system (position lights, brake lights and indicators) connected to the vehicle are mandatory. The load must not exceed the vehicle width (including mirrors); the rack length must not exceed 30% of the vehicle length. If it protrudes, a 50×50 cm approved reflective panel is required.
