The roof box, also known as a roof cargo box, is a closed container mounted on roof bars to transport luggage and equipment protected from rain and dust. Roof box or roof trunk: are they the same thing?
Yes, roof box and roof trunk are the same product: a rigid, enclosed container that is installed on the roof of the car. They are the two most common names for the same item, with similar search volumes. Unlike an open roof rack, the box protects the load from rain, dust, and prying eyes. Which capacity should you choose?
Capacity is measured in litres and should be chosen based on how many people are travelling and what you need to carry. A 320–400-litre roof box is enough for a weekend away for two or for extra soft luggage. A 450–500-litre box is the most versatile size for families. From 580–600 litres upwards, you can accommodate skis, snowboards, and bulky equipment. Remember that the usable length also matters, not just the volume, especially for skis.
Closed roof box or open roof rack: when is a roof box the better choice?
A closed roof box is the better choice when the load needs to be protected or when travelling on motorways: it is aerodynamic, quiet, and secure. An open roof rack is better suited to bulky, irregular, or occasional loads where protection is less important. If you frequently carry luggage or equipment throughout the year, a roof box is the more convenient choice.
Which roof bars is the roof box mounted on?
The roof box is not attached directly to the roof, but to the roof bars. Almost all Menabo models use a quick-mount system compatible with standard roof bars. Before purchasing the roof box, make sure you already have the appropriate bars for your car, or choose the two together..
Fuel consumption and aerodynamics
A roof box increases air resistance and therefore fuel consumption, especially at high speeds. Menabo roof boxes have a profile designed to minimise this effect, but it is good practice to remove the box when it is not needed and not exceed the roof load limits indicated in the car’s owner’s manual.
