Bike Holidays: Your Guide to a Worry-Free Trip

Summer Cycling Holidays: Everything You Need to Plan the Perfect Bike Trip

In brief: Planning a cycling holiday doesn't require dozens of decisions—just the right ones. This guide covers everything you need, from Italy's most scenic cycling routes to a practical packing checklist, plus the latest 2026 regulations for transporting your bike by car. Whether you're traveling solo or with family, here's everything you need for a stress-free adventure on two wheels.

There's always a specific moment when a cycling holiday stops being just an idea and becomes a real plan. It usually happens around February, when the days begin to grow longer and you find yourself opening maps with that familiar excitement, knowing the riding season is getting closer. You launch a route-planning app, sketch out ambitious itineraries, or message a friend who might be willing to join. From that moment on, the journey has already begun.

Planning a bike trip isn't difficult, but it does require a few thoughtful decisions. Choosing the destination, packing efficiently, and organizing the often-overlooked logistics of transporting your bike can make the difference between a memorable adventure and one remembered for all the wrong reasons.

What Are the Best Italian Cycling Routes for a Bike Holiday?

Italy is one of Europe's leading cycling destinations, thanks to FIAB's Bicitalia network, which maps 20 major routes covering more than 18,000 km (11,200 miles). Choosing where to ride isn't easy, but a few routes stand out for their accessibility, scenic variety, and excellent cycling infrastructure.

The Ciclovia del Sole is Italy's most searched cycling route. It stretches from San Candido in South Tyrol all the way to southern Italy, crossing the Apennines along the way. The Tuscan section, particularly between Florence and Bologna, offers one of the best combinations of spectacular scenery and manageable climbs, making it ideal for cyclists seeking a complete touring experience without extreme elevation gain.

The Po Cycle Route (Vento) is perfect for riders who prefer a slower pace and mostly flat terrain. Running alongside Italy's longest river from Venice to Turin, it's suitable for cyclists of every ability and features an extensive network of agriturismos and bike-friendly accommodations.

The Adriatic Cycle Route
Following Italy's eastern coastline from Trieste to Santa Maria di Leuca, the Adriatic Cycle Route is an excellent choice for a summer tour. The sea is never far away, towns are conveniently spaced, and the generally gentle terrain makes it ideal for multi-day rides.

If you only have a few days available, high-quality regional routes such as the Spoleto–Assisi Cycle Route or the cycling paths of Val Brembana offer rewarding experiences in just two or three days, without requiring complicated logistics.

What Should You Pack for a Bike Trip? The Essential Checklist

A bike trip requires less than you might think—but every item needs to earn its place. Weight matters, but functionality matters even more.

Technical Clothing

Pack two or three cycling kits, enough to wash one each evening and have it dry by morning. Bring a lightweight waterproof jacket—even in summer, mountain weather can be unpredictable—and both short-finger and full-finger gloves to adapt to changing conditions.

Avoid cotton base layers. Cotton retains moisture, becomes uncomfortable after just a few hours, and can lead to chafing on longer rides.

Repair Kit

Carry at least two spare inner tubes, tire levers, a mini pump, and a multitool with the correct hex keys for your bike. It's also worth packing a small roll of masking tape—it weighs almost nothing and can solve countless unexpected problems with surprising ease.

Documents and Electronics

Don't forget your ID or passport, health insurance card, and travel insurance emergency contact details if you're riding abroad. A power bank with a capacity of at least 10,000 mAh is highly recommended, as navigation apps drain your phone's battery much faster than most riders expect.

Accommodation

Always book at least your first and last night's accommodation before you leave. Keeping the intermediate stages flexible gives you more freedom along the way, while knowing exactly where you'll finish your first and final days helps reduce stress after long hours in the saddle.

How to Transport Your Bike by Car Safely and Legally

There are three main options: transporting the bike inside the car (inconvenient and usually limited to a partially dismantled bike), roof-mounted bike racks (versatile but with height restrictions and more effort required when loading), and towbar-mounted bike racks (the most practical solution for longer cycling trips). The best choice depends on the type of journey, the number of bikes, and how often you travel.

Transporting the Bike Inside the Car

This option is only possible with partially dismantled bikes (usually with the front wheel removed) and larger vehicles. It works for occasional trips, but it is inconvenient for a structured cycling holiday and does not allow you to transport multiple bikes comfortably.

Roof-Mounted Bike Racks

Roof-mounted bike racks are versatile and leave the trunk fully accessible, but they increase the vehicle's overall height (something to consider when using underground car parks or passing through height-restricted toll lanes). Loading and unloading bikes also requires physical effort, especially with heavier bicycles.

Towbar-Mounted Bike Racks

Towbar-mounted bike racks are the most practical choice for a cycling trip. Bikes remain at a comfortable height for loading and unloading, the car's trunk remains accessible (with tilting models), and stability during long journeys is superior. The main limitation is that the vehicle must be equipped with a towbar.

What Does Italian Road Law Say About Transporting Bikes?

Since 21 January 2025, a decree issued by the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has officially clarified the regulations governing rear-mounted and towbar-mounted bike racks, bringing an end to years of legal uncertainty. FIAB (the Italian Cycling Federation) has also published a detailed guide explaining the new rules and the obligations that apply.

The key requirements are:

  • A loaded bike rack may extend up to 30 cm (12 inches) beyond each side of the vehicle's rear lights, provided the vehicle's overall width does not exceed 2.55 metres (8.4 ft).
  • Towbar-mounted bike racks do not require any update to the vehicle registration document, as long as the permitted size and weight limits are respected.
  • The vehicle registration plate must remain visible. This can be achieved either by relocating the original plate to the designated holder on the bike rack or by using an approved duplicate registration plate.
  • If the bikes obstruct the vehicle's rear lights, approved auxiliary lighting must be fitted.

Failing to comply with these regulations can result in fines ranging from €87 to €344, depending on the nature of the violation.

Which Bike Rack Is Best for a Cycling Holiday?

For a dedicated cycling trip, a towbar-mounted bike rack is the most practical and well-balanced solution. Its ease of loading and unloading, excellent stability on long journeys, and continued access to the vehicle's trunk make it the preferred choice for cyclists who travel regularly.

The right model depends on how many bikes you need to carry and who you're travelling with.Orbit 2 is designed for solo riders and couples. Its lightweight construction and quick-loading system make it ideal for those looking for maximum convenience without compromising on quality. Orbit 3 is the better choice for families and larger groups, offering increased carrying capacity for three or more bikes of different sizes.

When Is the Best Time to Book a Cycling Holiday?

Earlier than most people think.

Bike-friendly accommodation along Italy's most popular cycling routes is often fully booked weeks in advance during the peak season. Waiting for the perfect weather forecast before making reservations frequently means missing out on the best places to stay.

A practical strategy is to book your travel dates and your first night's accommodation by March if you're planning a spring cycling holiday, while keeping the intermediate stages more flexible. The weather will never be completely predictable—but riding in the rain, at least once, is an experience every cyclist should have.

The best cycling holiday isn't the one that looks perfect on paper.

It's the one you actually set off on.

FAQ
